Camping
Every year many people are injured whilst camping from fire, with most accidents being avoidable! A little common sense and following our safety precautions you can ensure you and your friends are safe:
In case or emergency, make sure everyone knows the location of the nearest telephone, whether mobile or landline and where possible the nearest fire point.
Ensure tents are at least 6 meters apart
Never use naked flames or candles in or near the tent, always use a torch.
If possible avoid smoking inside the tent.
Keep flammables or gas cylinders outside and away from the tent.
When cooking make sure the cooker is stable and not inside the tent entrance, blocking your escape route.
Try to use gas cylinder appliances if possible, avoid appliances using liquid fuel.
Never place a gas cylinder next to the appliance whilst cooking.
Change disposable gas cylinders only when empty.
Making an open fire
Avoid making an open fire if possible.
If not possible - select an area of ground away from tents (10 metres), wooden fences, long grass, bushes or over hanging trees.
Make sure you clear the ground of grass, leaves and debris exposing an area of earth and if possible forming a ring around the fire.
Do not make a fire on peat ground.
Do not make a fire in windy conditions.
Care should be taken with flying embers.
The fire stack should be constructed so it collapse inwards when burning – this can usually be achieved by leaning all the materials to burn inwards forming a wigwam shape.
Never leave the fire unattended.
Make sure the fire is extinguished before leaving or going to bed.
