Barbeques
Everyone enjoys a good barbeque however it is easy to be distracted when you are cooking with friends and family around you. If you follow these few simple precautions it should be a safe and enjoyable experience:
Safety Points
- Make sure the barbeque is good working order and ensure it's on a flat level site.
- Place in an area well away from a shed, wooden fence, shrubs or trees.
- Stop children and pets playing games and running around the barbeque.
- Always keep a bucket of sand, water or garden hose nearby.
- Never leave the barbeque unattended.
- Never try to move a hot barbeque let it cool.
Charcoal Barbeques
- Place recognized firelighters on the base of the barbeque.
- Cover with enough charcoal - usually about 3 inches (75millimeters)
- Only use recognized starter fuel on cold coals and never petrol.
- Never squirt the recognized starter fuel on hot coals.
- Always light the barbeque outdoors never indoors.
- Avoid if possible wearing loose clothing when cooking.
Gas Barbeques
- Ensure gas cylinder is connected properly.
- Make sure the all connections are hand tight, do not over tighten.
- If you suspect a leak brush with soapy water and look for bubbles.
- After cooking, turn off at the cylinder first to let residual gas evaporate out of the pipe work.
- When empty, make sure the tap is turned off before changing.
- If possible always change a cylinder outdoors or in a well ventilated area.
